CentOS 6 をめぐって
アップストリームとなる Redhat Enterpriese Linxu 6 がリリースされて、半年以上経っても一向にリリースされない、という時に、「もうだめかも...」と思わせるような記事が。

ただ、CentOS-devel に流れるメールや、Karanbir Singh の twitter を、この数ヶ月、斜め読みしていて感じたことと、上記記事の印象とはかなり違います。
そもそも、Dag Wieers の立場って
CentOS がどういったチームになっているのかは良く分かりませんが、Dag Wieers と言えば、RHEL/CentOS 用に様々なパッケージを提供する RPMforge での活躍の方が印象にあります。
CentOS-announce で流れてくるメールを見ていると、コアのメンバーだと思われるのは下記の３名です。
- Karanbir Singh
- Johnny Hughes
- Tru Huynh
そのことは、Dag Wieers が CentOS-devel に投げたメールでもうかがい知れます。

このメールは、Johnny Hughes からのメールに対する返信となっていて、この文中で出てくる you は Johnny Hughes を指します。
上記の文は、
From the Team page at http://wiki.centos.org/Team I can only identify Russ as being active on the mailinglist.
と続いていて、Russ Herrold にも言及しているのと、その直後のメールで「ごめん Ralph。君もだ」と Ralph Angenendt を加えていますが、パッケージの署名にあるのは、Karanbir Singh、Johnny Huges、True Huynh の３名なので、この３人が中心ということで間違いないでしょう。
なので、Dag Wieers が CentOS の主要メンバーか、というと、ちょっと違うように見えます。
Dag Wieers と Johnny Hughes は仲が悪い？
コアメンバー達は、「いつになったら CentOS 6 は出るんだ？」と、メーリングリストへの投稿が多い事に、かなりフラストレーションが大きくなっているようでした。そこへ、火に油を注いだのは Dag Wieers でした。

嫌味っぽく、CentOS 6 の送れっぷりを指摘します。
Dag Wieers はメーリングリストでコアメンバーと口論になるケースは多く、特に Johnny Hughes と言い合いになっているような気がします。
Johnny Hughes が Dag Wieers の指摘に対して、
You are such a baby Dag.
と言い放ってみたり。このメールに対する Dag Wieers の返信に、ちょっと興味深い話が書いてあります。
It's been almost 2 years I left the CentOS team because I couldn't defend the CentOS project anymore.
これを読むと、Dag Wieers は CentOS のチームを２年前に離れていることになっています。
その一方で、CentOS 6 は QA フェーズへ
５月７日（EDT）に、QA チームの状況を管理するための、新しいサイトが立ち上がります。以前にも同様のステータスを管理するページがあったのですが、それがちっとも更新されなかった事があったので、今度はどうだろう、と様子を見ていたのですが、今回はきちんと更新されているようです。
この新しいサイトが立ち上がったときには、５月下旬にはリリースされるスケジュールが書かれていましたが、現在は６月上旬にずれ込んでいます。
この手のスケジュールが発表当初から遅れていくのは日常茶飯事なので、さほど気にならないのですが、これまで、こういったスケジュールや進行状況自体が、誰もが見られる形で公開されていなかった*1事が、疑心暗鬼を産み、フラストレーションが大きくなる原因になったと、個人的には思います。
雑感
Dag Wieers に限らず、CentOS の開発状況が見えない、と感じる人は多いと思います。また、あまりに遅れているんで、「貢献したいけど、どうしたら良い？」というメールもちらほら見ました。
ただ、こういった人を取り込むための努力が、今の CentOS チームに欠けているような印象があります。

上記のメールで Johnny Hughes が、CentOS の開発模様を語っています。このメールの中で、気になったのは下記の文章です。
The purpose of the CentOS Project is to produce an operating system that you can choose to use or not to use. It is not to tell someone else how to produce an operating system.
「CentOS プロジェクトの目的は OS を作ることで、作り方を教えることじゃない」。それはその通りなんだけど、それではコミュニティが育たないのでは？ という気がします。
おまけ
Microsoft の Hyper-V で CentOS 6 の正式サポートになった、というニュースがありましたが、その関連記事で、Johnny Hughes が CentOS 6 の遅れの原因を語っています。

CentOS 6 is getting very close. The main issues that we are having with CentOS 6 is caused by two things. The first is that we can not build on our current build system since there is no interoperability of RPMs built on EL5 and EL6 (see this bug)
Our current build systems that have CentOS-5 on them can not be used because of this, so we needed to design a whole new build system for CentOS-6. Since we wanted to build on CentOS and not the upstream EL6 distribution, we needed to literally build what we needed to create the build system first.
The second issue we are having is that not all the files that Red Hat used in the build process are released. They have intermediate files on their 'Staged' build system that were newer than their Beta release of EL6 or Fedora 12, but older than those released in EL6. These were used to build the released RPMS, but they are not actually in EL6. We have to find (or build) versions of these missing files to get the proper builds.
一つは、それまで使っていたビルド・システムが、CentOS 6 用に使えなかった事で、もうひとつは、ビルド時に必要なファイルで、RedHat から公開されていない物があり、それを探し出してビルドするのに手間がかかった、という事だそうです。
前者に関しては、確かに大変だったろうなぁ、とは思うんだけど、後者に関しては、Scientific Linux はどうしたんだろう、という疑問があります。CentOS 5.6 のリリースで一段落した後の Johnny Hughes が、こんな事を書いていました。

I would also like to make sure that no one on this list thinks that we have anything but the utmost respect for the Scientific Linux project. The devels over there are very nice and we have worked with them in the past and I am sure will continue to do so in the future.
「かつて Scientific Linux と一緒に仕事をしたこともあるし、今後もそうしていきたい。」是非、そうあって欲しいと思います。
